Swift Performance AI’s primary functionality is caching. Its cache warmer operates by loading all your pages as required, storing a static version of each one. When a visitor accesses a page from the cache, your server retrieves this static file which requires significantly fewer resources (CPU and memory) and is much quicker than generating a fresh page for every visit. Some managed hosting services have their own caching systems; these can sometimes be faster but are usually more beneficial to the hosting company. In such cases, you have the option to turn off Swift Performance AI’s caching feature. However, in most situations, it’s advisable to keep it activated for optimal performance.

Enhancing CSS is a crucial step in improving Core Web Vital and should always be active. There exist three tiers of enhancement: Deactivation, Generation of Critical CSS and optimization of CSS delivery, and Optimization of font delivery. If your fonts are issue-free, it’s recommended to always opt for full optimization.

Another significant upgrade in Swift Performance AI is the authentic JavaScript optimization. When activated, Swift Performance will enhance JavaScript execution while reducing the load on the main browser thread. If you activate the ‘Logged in cache’ feature, Swift Performance will deliver cached pages to users who are logged in. In the majority of situations, it’s perfectly fine to serve cached pages to these users. If there are components that need customization, AJAX can be used to load them via fragments, or you could turn on Collage for automatic detection. The ‘Exclude URLs’ feature allows you to omit specific pages based on their URL (or part of it). Input one URL (or part) per line and then update. Swift Performance AI is capable of automatically identifying pages that cannot be cached, but given the existence of over 50,000 WordPress plugins and approximately 30,000 themes, there may be instances where a non-cacheable page is not detected by Swift Performance. If you discover a plugin or theme-related page that should always be omitted from caching, please inform us.

The ‘Exclude Post Types’ option allows you to exclude certain types of posts. Multiple post types can be selected with this feature. Similar to pages, Swift Performance AI can automatically identify non-cacheable post types as well. However due to the sheer number of WordPress plugins available (over 50 000), there may be occasions where Swift Performance fails to detect a non-cacheable post type. If there’s a custom post type that should always be excluded from caching, we would appreciate your feedback.

By default, Swift Performance will avoid caching if a query string is present in the URL. However, there are two ways to alter this standard behavior:

  1. Ignored Query Parameters: You have the option to specify which query parameters should be disregarded. Each parameter should be listed individually. Swift Performance already excludes certain parameters by default such as utm source, utm campaign, utm medium, utm expid, utm term, utm content, fb action ids, fb action types, fb source, fbclid, ga, gclid and age-verified.
  2. Allowed Query Parameters: You can name the query parameters that should not be ignored but instead cached individually. For instance if you include s parameter then each of your search results pages will be cached separately. Again list each parameter individually.

Swift Performance also bypasses caching by default if specific cookies are set but you can list any cookies here that you want included in the cache process. If you identify a cookie that should always bypassed please inform us.

The GZIP feature is usually automatically detected and configured by Swift Performance so manual activation isn’t necessary but if you encounter double GZIP issues then disabling this feature in Swift Performance settings may be required.

The Browser Cache option allows Swift Performance to assign expiry headers for various content types which generally doesn’t require disabling unless it’s unnecessary (for example if a CDN with its own expiry values is being used).

Maintain Initial Headers Dispatch initial headers for pages stored in cache. If a plugin that sends customized headers is in use, you have the option to retain these for the cached variant as well.

Swift Performance AI ensures image optimization upon upload. It works on all images, including third-party and background ones, on-demand. When a page is cached by the cache warmer, it collects all images from that page and optimizes them. Hence, there’s no real need for you to optimize images upon upload unless you want to serve optimized images for the first (uncached) pageview.

The AI uses native lazyload for images and enhances it further. It can automatically identify crucial images and exclude them from lazyloading. However, if you prefer to use another lazyloading plugin (which is not recommended), you’ll need to disable this feature.

Swift Performance also handles smart image sizing by automatically resizing images for every used viewport size and deploying responsive images on all pages—even those viewed by logged-in visitors. If you wish to use a different plugin for responsive images (which is not advised), this feature needs to be disabled.

During the optimization process, Swift Performance AI identifies important images on each page. These pictures are excluded from lazyloading and preloaded using the appropriate responsive size in order to enhance LCP and FCP scores.
